High Water Considerations for the Middle Fork of the Salmon River.
Floating the Middle Fork of the Salmon River at a high flow can be an eye opening, heart pounding, adventure of a lifetime opportunity!
- Know what you are getting yourself into! Do as much research as you possibly can before you head to Boundary Creek. Knowledge is power so arm yourself for the journey ahead.
- Make sure everyone in your group knows how high water could affect your trip. Prepare mentally/physically for fast pace decision making and pulling hard on the oars to make it to eddies.
- Dress to get wet. High water trips down the Middle Fork of the Salmon River generally mean that you are going earlier in the season. Temperatures can be cold, snow is never out of the question, and the water temps are extremely cold. Dress for the worst case scenario.
- Make sure your gear is in top-notch shape. Rafts should be run firm. All PFDs should be good quality and in like new condition.
- Keep within eye of sight of the boats in front and behind you. Communicate the best you can about potential hazards in the river. Keep your eyes open and your head in the game.
Successfully floating the Middle Fork of the Salmon River during high flows can be very rewarding to those who are brave, and skilled enough, to take on the challenge.
